Moving In (Inflyttning) and Moving out (Utflyttning) Records

The moving in (inflyttning) and moving out (utflyttning) books are key books for tracing your Swedish ancestors who moved from place to place. Whenever a person moved out of the parish, each person was required to notify the minister of his or her move. The minister would give the person a certificate that would be given to the minister in the new parish where the person moved and the minister would note the move in the moving out book as well in the household examination book. At the new parish, the person would give the certificate to the minister and the minister would record the move in to the parish in the moving in book and the household examination book.

The information in the moving in book (inflyttning) usually includes the name of the person, moving in date, place (usually the parish) where the person came from and the place where the person was moving to in the parish. Many times the actual page number in the household examination book is noted and other times it is the village or farm name.

The information in the moving out book (utflyttning) usually includes the name of the person, moving out date, and place in the parish where the person is moving from (name of farm or village or page number in the household examination book) and the parish or country where the person is moving to. If the person immigrated to North America, the entry is usually Nord Amerika although occasionally a city or state is noted.

Because of the completeness of the Swedish Church Books one can follow a person’s life in many cases from birth to death or birth to emigration using the household examination books. If a person moved around in Sweden the moving books are the links between the household examination books that allow one to trace that person.

Below are examples of moving in and moving out records:

In some books, the heading titles are not repeated on every page, so you may need to browse the book to see if there are heading titles. In this case, the heading title is on the first page for the moving out records for 1837 but not on the subsequent pages for moving out records for that year. The next record shows Edvard Sandburg moving out of the parish in 1837.

If you wish to trace Edvard Sandberg forward, the next step would be to search for the Sunne parish moving in book for the year 1837. Since there are two Sunne parishes within Sweden: one in Jämtland and one in Värmland; it is recommended to search first in the moving in book for Sunne in Värmland county since Älvsbacka is in Värmland and the likelihood is that he moved to a parish nearby. You will find him in the moving in book for Sunne entry number 59 at the following reference: Sunne B:2 (1830-1848) Image 28 / page 51 (AID: v8326.b28.s51, NAD: SE/VA/13512). That reference will state that he moved to Rottneros in Sunne parish. Your next step would be to find Rottneros in the Sunne’s household examination book that includes the year 1837. You will find him at the following reference: Sunne AI:37 (1835-1840) Image 431 / page 424 (AID: v13316.b431.s424, NAD: SE/VA/13512)

By using the moving in and moving out books plus the household examination books, one can trace the move of a person within Sweden.
